On the Road Again
By Bicycle
If you long for adventure beyond the Interstate, consider following the path of Lewis and Clark or other historic trails or rolling through prairies once teeming with buffalo. Non-motorized trails make it possible—Missouri’s Katy Trail, Pennsylvania and Maryland’s Great Allegheny Passage, and Nebraska’s Cowboy Trail. Learn about long-distance rail-trails devoted solely to bicyclists and pedestrians and discover ways to explore America via the back roads. Discuss the pros and cons of using fully supported outfitters versus self-guided trips and how to outfit your bike (and yourself) for long-distance trips. Sarah McGregor and Pete Naseth, a couple of fifty-somethings in average condition, have done several self-supported bike tours. They will share a wealth of information, tips, and inspiration. Participants will be invited to join them for an optional bike trip on the Mickelson Trail in South Dakota’s Black Hills over the Labor Day weekend, 2008.
